In the gym, dumbbells, gym equipment, mats and benches are used by a lot of people every day. What's left behind isn't just sweat, skin flakes and dust. Studies have also detected bacteria and fungi on various surfaces.

The main germ hotspots in the gym are heavily touched gym equipment, porous mats, padding and bench backrests, the gym floor, and the changing rooms and showers.

Which areas count as germ hotspots in the gym?

  • Dumbbells, handles and weight plates
  • Exercise and yoga mats
  • Padding and bench backrests
  • Floors in the training area
  • Changing rooms and showers

In short: Frequently touched, damp or porous surfaces deserve the most attention. Hand hygiene, flip-flops, a clean gym towel and properly cleaning gym equipment can cut out unnecessary transmission routes.

Please note: Detecting microorganisms does not automatically mean there is a risk of infection. The load varies depending on the gym, the surface, cleaning, usage and the study in question.
