Sweat, skin flakes, hair and dust are left behind on gym equipment and other shared gym surfaces. Scientific studies have also detected a range of microorganisms there.

These include skin bacteria, gut bacteria, viruses, moulds, skin and yeast fungi, and in some cases antibiotic-resistant strains. Which organisms are found varies depending on the surface examined and the study.

Which microorganisms have been found on gym surfaces?

  • Skin bacteria such as staphylococci
  • Gut bacteria such as E. coli
  • Viruses on frequently touched contact surfaces
  • Moulds on suitable surfaces
  • Skin and yeast fungi
  • In some cases antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains

In short: Gym surfaces are not sterile. What matters is cutting out unnecessary transmission routes — without turning every detected microorganism into an automatic health risk.

Please note: Detecting a microorganism does not automatically mean an infection will occur. The actual risk depends on factors such as quantity, point of entry, immune status and hygiene conditions.
