Why I'm writing this article

I work in MedTech, spend time in hospitals and attend operations. Strict hygiene standards apply there — controlled environments, documented cleaning protocols, clear responsibilities. At the gym, it's different. Public spaces, shared surfaces, varying hygiene standards among users.

What's bothered me for 20 years of training: gym towels on the floor. Not because the floor itself is dangerous — but because the towel then goes onto pads, gets used on your face, spreads germs. I see it every day. And from my work, I know: this could be solved structurally.

This article explains what actually lives on gym surfaces — without panic, but with facts.

What lives at the gym? Bacteria, viruses, fungi

Gyms are public spaces with lots of people, sweat and shared surfaces. What lives there isn't surprising — but the facts are worth knowing.

Bacteria

Staphylococcus aureus — a bacterium that lives on skin and can cause infections in wounds — was detected in an analysis of 288 samples from 16 fitness facilities (Dalman et al., 2019). The bacterium lives on almost everyone's skin, so finding it at the gym isn't surprising.

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is an antibiotic-resistant variant. It was also found in the Dalman study, but far less often than ordinary Staphylococcus aureus. For healthy people with an intact immune system, the infection risk is low — for people with open wounds or weakened immune systems, it's higher.

Fecal bacteria were detected on gym equipment in a 2024 study. Inadequate hand hygiene after using the toilet can be discussed as a plausible transmission route (Batista et al., 2024).

Viruses

Cold viruses, flu viruses and other pathogens can be transmitted via surfaces — especially when sick people train and surfaces aren't cleaned. Surface transmission (fomite transmission) is considered possible in the literature, but often less significant than aerosol or droplet transmission. Its role depends heavily on viral load, survival time on surfaces, and cleaning frequency.

Fungi

Molds, athlete's foot and other skin fungi live on floors, mats, and in showers and changing rooms. They're transmitted through direct skin contact or via damp surfaces. Going barefoot increases the risk.

Skin flakes and sweat

Skin flakes are everywhere. They're not directly dangerous, but they're a growth medium for bacteria and fungi. Sweat contains salts, proteins and microorganisms — and makes surfaces sticky, so germs adhere better.

Hotspots: where most germs live

Not all surfaces at the gym carry the same load. The Dalman study (2019) documents the detection of Staphylococcus aureus on frequently touched surfaces like medicine balls and treadmill handles. Mats combine floor and body contact — an ideal environment for fungi and bacteria.

Floors are often perceived as especially dangerous. Germ load there is measurable — but direct contact is rarer than with handles. A plausible route: gym towels lying on the floor can pick up germs and spread them further.

The gym towel: protection or risk?

A gym towel can protect you — or spread germs. Used as a barrier between skin and equipment, it reduces direct contact. But: a towel that lies on the floor picks up bacteria, fungi and sweat residue. If you then bring it to your face or put it on the next machine, you spread those germs further.

The solution: keep your gym towel off the floor and keep it clean. Sounds simple — but it's an effective lever.

What you can actually do

Training hygienically doesn't take paranoia — just three simple measures:

1. Wipe equipment down before and after use

Disinfectant wipes or hygiene sprays are available at most gyms. Quickly wiping handles, pads and mats lowers the germ load. Before use, it protects you. After use, it protects the next person.

2. Keep your gym towel off the floor

Gym towels that lie on the floor can pick up germs and spread them further — an avoidable indirect contamination route. The structural solution: a fixed spot that keeps the towel off the floor — a hook, a magnetic clip, or a towel with a built-in magnet. That eliminates the problem for good, without you having to think about it every set. Once established, it runs automatically.

3. Stick to the two-side principle

The side of the towel that goes on pads or equipment shouldn't be the same side that goes on your face. Sounds trivial — but it's often forgotten mid-workout. Once internalized, it runs automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Is the infection risk at the gym really higher than elsewhere? +

In studies, gym equipment sometimes shows similar or higher germ counts than public toilet seats. Not because toilets are clean — but because gym equipment is often disinfected less frequently than assumed. The decisive difference: with a toilet seat, contact is brief and isolated. With gym equipment, you touch the same surface repeatedly, intensively and with full skin contact — right after dozens of other users, with sweat and raised moisture, and across various machines and surfaces within one session.

Then there's the transmission chain: after touching equipment, hands often move unconsciously to the face and even the mucous membranes. Training-related micro-abrasions of the skin create additional entry points that don't exist in everyday life. And then the gym towel comes into play. It sits on the floor, gets thrown over the pad, picks up germs along the way — and then ends up on your face. It's the distributor. It links every contact point into a single transmission chain: floor → gym towel → face.

What matters is several variables together: the germ count on the surface, the type of pathogen, your immune status, available entry points — open wounds, micro-abrasions from training, mucous membranes — and your hygiene behavior. For healthy people without open wounds, the risk is manageable. Anyone training with a weakened immune system, skin conditions or fresh injuries should take the topic more seriously.

Is wiping equipment only after use enough? +

No. Wiping after use is a contribution to the community — you leave cleaner equipment behind. For yourself, wiping BEFORE use does more: it reduces your direct contact with germs from the previous user.

Are some machines more of a hygiene concern than others? +

Yes. Handles, dumbbells, cable stations and pads get touched frequently and cleaned less often — so they typically carry a higher load. Mats are critical for athlete's foot and bacteria, because they combine floor and body contact. Cardio machines usually involve less direct skin contact, but handles should still be wiped down.

The floor is often underestimated — not because it has the highest germ count, but because it works as a distributor. A gym towel lying on the floor picks up bacteria, fungi, dust and sweat residue. If it then goes on a pad or onto your face, those germs travel onward. The floor itself is rarely the direct problem — the towel that touches it is.

What helps more: the gym cleaning more often, or me behaving more hygienically? +

Both work. Gym cleaning lowers the baseline contamination, but can't keep up with recontamination when usage is high. Your own hygiene behavior — wiping down, towel management — lowers your exposure directly and reliably. The combination is optimal.

Gyms aren't sterile — and they don't need to be. Bacteria, viruses and fungi are there — but the infection risk for healthy people is moderate. Three measures make a big difference: wipe equipment down, keep your gym towel off the floor, and stick to the two-side principle. None of them takes much time. Together, they help you train hygienically.
