A clean setup in the gym doesn't just protect you from germs. It makes training faster, more focused and less disrupted. Hygiene and efficiency aren't separate goals – they come from the same systems. And they're sabotaged by the same mistakes.
The key points at a glance
- People who perceive a gym as clean and safe are more likely to stick to protective routines such as using a gym towel and disinfecting gym equipment (Falese et al., 2025, n=1,321).
- Equipment cleanliness correlates with member retention (r=0.64, n=2,900, Zanfir, 2024).
- Smartphone-induced mental fatigue lengthens rest periods and measurably reduces training volume (Macíag et al., 2024).
- Hygiene and efficiency in the gym come from the same thing: an organised, distraction-free setup.
Cleanliness influences training behaviour – and that's documented
People who perceive a gym as clean may behave differently than they would in a messy one. That isn't gut feeling – there is empirical evidence for the connection.
A cross-sectional study of 1,321 gym members found that the perceived hygiene and safety quality of the gym influences the likelihood of showing combined preventive behaviour – measured as a bundle of gym towel use, equipment disinfection and keeping distance (Falese et al., 2025). The individual behaviours were not analysed separately; gym towel use is one element of the bundle, not an isolated endpoint.
The same applies to satisfaction and retention. In a study of 2,900 members of Romanian fitness centres, equipment cleanliness showed the strongest single correlation with member retention (r=0.64) – ahead of factors such as how modern the facilities were (Zanfir, 2024). The finding relates to the cleanliness of gym equipment, not to cleanliness as a general concept. Transferring it to the DACH region is plausible but not directly measured. Cleanliness isn't a comfort bonus. It's a core promise.
Equipment and atmosphere – what members really rate
A conjoint analysis from Seoul examined which gym factors matter most to users. Rank 1: enough training space. Rank 2: cleanliness – specifically «well-maintained gym equipment». Rank 3: indoor climate (Jang et al., 2024). Aesthetics and interior design came a long way behind.
A systematic review of service quality in fitness centres confirms it: equipment quality and facility quality are among the nine central dimensions that determine customer satisfaction (Ferreira, 2023, 17 studies). Cleanliness is structurally embedded there – not optional.
Disorder costs real training time
What characterises inefficient training – rest periods that run too long, poor focus, distractions – can be read off measurable parameters such as training volume, heart rate and repetitions. Macíag et al. (2024) describe these factors in the context of mental fatigue caused by smartphones; the study does not offer a formal definition of inefficient training – that is an interpretation.
Smartphone-induced mental fatigue is a documented factor: it lengthens rest periods, raises perceived exertion and reduces the training volume actually completed (Macíag et al., 2024). The step from «smartphone distraction» to «general disorder» is logically plausible – but it has not been studied directly. The analogy: anything that interrupts a workout – searching for your gym towel, putting it down on the floor, picking it up, wiping it off – costs cognitive and time resources.
How much time does «just putting it down for a second» cost? Deciding where, finding a corner, bending down, picking it up, repositioning it, maybe briefly wondering whether that gym towel should still go anywhere near your face. Sometimes several times per machine. Those aren't just seconds – it's broken focus.
Equipment availability and mental overhead
Studies on training efficiency show that equipment availability and short waiting times are among the relevant factors influencing training volume. The same principle applies on a personal level: if you don't have to search, put things down or correct them, you train with more focus. This connection is plausible, but it has not yet been studied directly for gym towel handling. Based on our own experience and feedback from early users of the GYMMONKY Magnetic Towel Clip, it holds up.
An organised setup reduces mental overhead during training. The gym towel hangs where it's supposed to hang. There's no surface to look for, it isn't on the floor, it isn't on your neighbour's machine, it isn't just anywhere. That's not a small comfort. It's a system element.
The setup as a shared solution to both problems
«In my years as a class instructor and trainer, I saw how much training time gets lost to small stuff – a gym towel that falls down, hunting for the right spot, a short break that stretches out. That isn't a character problem. That's a setup problem.»
– Olga, Co-Founder GYMMONKY
What connects hygiene and efficiency is this: neither comes from more discipline, but from better systems. The most effective gym hacks aren't machines or supplements – they're setup decisions that eliminate sources of disruption before they arise.
Hygiene: Not putting the gym towel on the floor eliminates one concrete contamination route. It isn't an act of willpower – it needs a solution that prevents floor contact without you having to think about it.
Efficiency: Having the gym towel on the machine, without searching for it or picking it up, eliminates a source of micro-interruptions. That isn't a discipline task either – it's a setup decision.
The GYMMONKY Magnetic Towel Clip addresses both problems at once: it holds the gym towel on the equipment, keeps it off the floor and turns both into an automatic habit.
What a clip actually solves – and what it doesn't

The GYMMONKY Magnetic Towel Clip is not a hygiene product in the clinical sense. It offers no disinfection and no germ barrier.
What it does offer: the gym towel hangs structurally on the machine – no sliding off benches and backrests. No floor contact, no putting it down repeatedly on different surfaces, no unconsciously picking up germs from the floor.
And: the gym towel is always where you need it. No searching, no bending down, no interruption. The clip turns two hygiene principles – gym towel off the floor and controlled handling – into second nature.
What it doesn't solve: It's no substitute for washing your gym towel after every session. It's no substitute for disinfecting gym equipment. It isn't a cure-all – it's one system element within a larger hygiene setup.

Frequently asked questions
Does cleanliness in the gym really make a difference to training? +
Yes – for two reasons. First: when a gym looks clean, people pay more attention to hygiene, for example to using a gym towel. Second: cleanliness strongly affects how satisfied members are and whether they stay with the gym. In a clean environment, many people train more consciously.
How much real training time does disorder cost? +
There is no direct measurement for gym towel disorder. What is documented: mental fatigue and distractions measurably reduce training volume and lengthen rest periods (Macíag et al., 2024). Small structural disruptions have real costs – even if the exact figure depends on your individual setup.
Is the GYMMONKY Magnetic Towel Clip a hygiene solution? +
Partly. It prevents floor contact – an avoidable contamination route – and turns controlled gym towel handling into a habit. It doesn't replace washing your gym towel after every session or disinfecting gym equipment. It's a system element, not a cure-all.
What matters more: hygiene or efficiency in the gym? +
It isn't an either-or question. Both come from the same thing: an organised setup that eliminates sources of disruption. Having your gym towel on the machine saves time and prevents floor contact at the same time.
Do I have to wash my gym towel after every workout? +
Yes. A clip helps you handle the gym towel more cleanly during training – above all through less floor contact and less uncontrolled putting down. What it can't do: reset the germ load after training. Washing at ≥60 °C after every session remains the most effective measure, provided the material is suitable (Akhoundi et al., 2022).
